Chew Fu

Photobucket

First time somebody said "This is a Chew Fu remix" I said "Chew Food? What?" Thinking maybe I was missing dinner or something. But no, I was sent the new Chew Fu fix, along with practically everything else the dude has ever done, EVER. Well, maybe not, but it's a pretty long list of zShare's that I just don't feel like copying and pasting [If you are interested in them, email me.] It's interesting when an artist sends a mass list of his/her tracks, along with their newly released one because the listener gets to at least hear what the artist/group is about in more than one three minute track. Compare that to the 90% of emails I get from people who send me myspace links that don't even work......then you've got yourself a decent promoter.

apologies.

My long hiatus has been the result of:
getting a Wii, and playing extensively
lack of interest in anything that has been released lately
Justice's horribly new religious song
school, and work.
I'll try and update a little more regularly now and then, that is, if anybody is even left to read this after my disappointing hiatus.

In other news...
I like Fred Falke. A lot, for some reason. I like just about everything he does. I just wish there was more out there of his own works rather than his remixes of songs, but hey, DJ's can only do so much you know.

blend...of what?

Photobucket

Everybody keeps talking about Lil' Wayne. Blender magazine rated his album Tha Carter III four and a half stars. The dude has "fear god" tattooed on his eyelids. I feel like people are only making a big deal out of this album because the artist hasn't released a thing in years. It's a comeback, yes, I know. But Blender, of all music magazines, does not have the musical background they need in order to rate some of the albums proposed. Ratata's new album got 2 and a half stars. David Bowie's Live at Santa Monica got a whopping five. Yes I'm sure it's a fantastic live set but Bowie got a full page preview, while bands like CSS and N.E.R.D get small collums with variable reviews that must have been written by a monkey. Blender values the old tried and true artists who are known to always give a good show but they lack a direction forward into music that is actually new and innovative. It's quite depressing actually. I, personally, value Spin as a much better magazine because it gave a full 6-page spread over Kid Sister, the Cool Kids and A-Trak in a previous issue and the mag also allows many of it's features to be written by interns, those with new and fresh musical taste.

On that note, I'd like to share my new favorite Crookers song. I like it because it's has a rico swave feel to it. New house for the dance floor.

and....we're back.

Apologies for the lack of posts. Got stuck in somewhat of a rut for a while, listening to the same things over and over again until I found reason to move forward. This Danger track might be new, it might not be, but it got handed to me today and I absolutely love it. It has a bit of carnival-quality to it. I can't explain it, but maybe you can listen and just know what I mean. Vague, yes, I know. Coming out of such a long hiatus is difficult; one falls behind in the blog-world when he/she does not incorporate themselves in it regularly [rambling] just listen.

Varig

Varig has had the patience to sit in my inbox during my (im)patient wait for the internet to work at my house. Finally I get to release two of their songs, one that's on their myspace and one that isn't. Minimal club hits is what I would call them. Not so minimal or ambient that I would fall asleep to it, of course not! But not so heavy with bass or synths that I can barely stand it. A nice equilibrium indeed.

Shazam

I haven't heard much from Shazam since his awesome Muscles remix from a while back. This one (straight from disco dust ) is quite groovy and steady all the way through. I'm surprised he's not signed yet, since it seems like these days all you need is one hit remix and BAM, you're a superstar. Obviously you can tell I'm still worked up about the same-old remixes that keep floating around. Maybe it's hormones. Maybe it's just time to take a vacation. Too bad this blog doesn't pay. This song put me in a good mood though, and e-crack guarantees it will for you too!

I heard through the grapevine....that STRFCKR is a group outta Amsterdam. How nice would that be, to be from Amsterdam? Many, many reason guys, many. They sent me a butt-load of tracks to my gmail awhile ago in between the large amounts of spam and crap I get everyday. But there they were, sending their best wishes with some of their best songs. DJ80HD and Nils Nilsson

Onward with the original tracks! This is by my good friend DJ80hd, who gives me a lot of inspiration and music to chat about on this blog, and by Nils Nilsson. DJ80HD relates this track to an Aphex Twin vibe. I agree, but at first I thought of it as an early 70s scratch DJ vibe. I could see some slow moving krumpin' going on with this as well (I watched "So You Think You Can Dance" last week, okay, give me a break I have three television channels to choose from and it ain't gonna be the religious one).

Brabe

Photobucket

Brabe is intriguing. I listened to his song "Nascasto" off his myspace and at first I was like, okay, this is like minimal techno-club-house style or something, right? Some of the tracks start out in a folkish-emo sound even. But nooooo way dude, he totally breaks it down into electro-fidget-house or whatever you want to call it and I love it. Took me by surprise really, I am not going to compare it to any other artist because I like the originality of his tracks. Something I am quite concerned with, which you might know if you've been reading this blog recently. He integrates quite a few different styles into his work and I also like the minimal amount of vocals in it as well. Keep an eye on this guy. Listen to the songs ALL THE WAY THROUGH people, trust me, it's worth it.

Here's a remix of one of his original tracks (yeah I know it's a remix but it's damn good one and you should listen. his original work is on his myspace which I strongly urge you to check out).

If you want to read up on an interesting article about how blogs and music intertwine you should read this post by disco delicious and reply with what you think. Tuff Wheelz

Photobucket

Imagine if Strip Steve made a track with Surkin & Lazaro. That’s roughly the combination of 90’sesque synth chords hitting on 3rds & blunt kick drums that you’ll find in the sounds of Tuff Wheelz.

At least that's what their myspace says, which you can check out for more info. It's a pretty good original track. I've been absent lately looking for more music that is original and not a remix of a remix of a remix. Even though a remix can be even better than an original track, the uniqueness of an artist's sound shows through when they work on their own ideas that they created from scratch (or Abelton loops, whatev). But it definitely shows longevity in an artist's career. If you've got your own original track, email me. Would love to hear it.

Something I can't seem to get out of my head lately (besides my growing obsession with The Bloody Beetroots) is a group of guys called ER2, who are actually going to be playing with The BB's soon (see poster below). This is their debut on Electronic Crack, but they've already been featured on kidz by colette, boule a facettes and trashbags kids, some of my fav's. Check out the line up on this poster for the festival that ER2 will be playing at on June 28th:

bangers...

Why does it seem like people are mistaking something great for just another fad in music? I'm talking about the Ed Banger records, the Ed Banger sound, hence the term "banger" that is given to this genre of music. Yet almost as soon as it's being recognized by a large group of people it is also getting passed over as just another link in the chain. Others would say this isn't true, such as this Discodust report, and I think I'll stay true to what I want to listen to as well, not what is exactly "up and coming." All electronic music is up-and-coming in a sense because technology improves every freaking second in this capitalist country and therefore something new and innovative is always going to push through the muck. So, why don't you get off your high horse and just enjoy the music or switch tracks on your iPod? Thanks.

In other news...I don't know how old this track is (if that really matters) that I saw on Buzzendirekt but it's a "banger," and I sure don't think it's out of style. Too bad I can't read French or maybe I'd have different opinions on the whole situation. But just listen, and take it or leave it.

Recently I've started to listen to a lot more of Crookers, just like my growing obsession with The Bloody Beetroots. This song "lolly pop" is pretty damn good, and they even throw in a classical reference (10 kudos to the one who tells me what it is). booty

So the first time I heard this I was like, ok, another song about the booty. Whoop-de-doo. I've only heard Uffie sing about smackin' ass forever now, and it's gettin' kinda old. But then I was thinking, ok, it is only a song about booty. And the video is just that: booty. What harm can be done? It's better than any rap song about booty. This definitely contradicts my post about the "Justice" sound, since it's not really noticeable in this piece. Either that or the bouncing booty is hypnotizing. Hmm...

Justice

Remember that video I posted with the nymphs and fairy's all Lord of the Ring-ish and what not...well, Justice decided to remix that song. It's, well, you know, all Justice-d now, since it seems like whenever they get their hands on something to remix it comes out like an extension of their previous album with the same sounds over and over. I don't know if the general population of listeners realizes this, or if anybody even cares, but I'm starting to get tired of it. Don't get me wrong, I love the "Justice" sound that they have, but I'm starting to wonder what they are going to do next. I'll keep an eye out on it.

Or I could NOT lie and tell you that I'm bored out of my mind at work and needed to occupy my time with something constructive. Such as...checking out the blog roll. The song I'm putting up today is a Moulinex remix, the [Portuguese] artist who did that great Cut Copy "Lights and Music" remix a while back. I think this remix is even better. New Hifi track to share, an edit of Sebastian Tellier's "Kilometer Low" off his Sexual Sportswear album. Now don't confuse Sebastian Tellier with the ever popular Ed Banger SebastiAn, who is quite different. Tellier has been around a whole lot longer and has several different musical styles displayed on a multitude of albumns. Hifi's taken the beat of "Kilometer Low" and sped it up with his own drum beat, in turn making it bangin' and dance-a-ble for the clubs. Definitely worth a spot on your iTunes.

I guess the popo's were supposed to come to campus and arrest people who have been downloading music. Like, put them in handcuff's and shit. I personally didn't see a thing but thought the whole concept was quite hillarious. Now, on to the music downloading...

Found this great EP from Herve off of neon skyline. I love the funk it brings and the smooth transitions between songs. A lot of mixes I've heard lately sound like they were made on programs that "try" to do all the work for you, and instead leave you with a crappy transition that slows one song to the other's speed. He says it was created as an ode to his friends that he gets to come in contact with over the summer and those he hasn't met yet. Definitely what I keep in mind when I create the same mixes for my Summer road trips. It has some of my favorite semi-recent songs as well, definitely worth a listen.

remix the remix of the remix's remix.

I don't know what's been put in the water lately, but it seems like there are a billion remix contests going on. There's the "remix the original," "remix the remix" and "remix the remix somebody made of your remix." It gets a little confusing and I find it all quite over-rated. But I do believe that people who like to remix songs should do so, and then send them to me! I found this song off of 24 hours and I like it, but it needs "something." I don't know what that something is, and I myself am not a remix-er. So listen, download, get creative or not, either way it's still a pretty good song. If you read this blog on a somewhat frequent basis, send me an email at electroniccrack@gmail.com and let me know what you think about this music I post on here. I'd like to hear from the listeners, since I am one myself.

You might remember this post a while ago that introduced Casxio. It's not something I would normally post, but it's quite hip, I can feel it. They just released a four-song EP, featuring their hit "Seventeen." You can catch them April 22 in Vegas at the Beatles Revolution Lounge.

Somewhat disco-housy, the group Ice Cream hails from Berlin. This first one's on the verge of being progressive, but it isn't quite as fast or driving. The second one has some sweet guitar riffs, but I really like the back beat behind it all.

I really like how sometimes you just run across a song and it grabs you in. It happens to you too, you know it. And right now I'm talking about The Whip. But the song I'm putting down is a remix by Crystal Castles, who I'm sure some of you have heard of. Definitely worth the download.

spring break baby.

I'm going to Chicago! It's about damn time, for real. Less than a week...

But in the mean time, I found this off disco workout. I've been a fan of Squarepusher for quite some time now, and it's nice to hear somebody do a remix of him. Some of the electronic "hits" that I've been seeing on the blog-roll are lacking luster. I feel that a push towards remixing a song that's been out of mainstream minds for a while is much more desirable than the billion Hot Chip remixes or Boys Noize edits that are spamming the electro-cosmos. Now don't get me wrong, there are some remixes out there that are fantastic, such as Boys Noize's remix of Cut Copy's "Lights and Music," which I can't seem to get out of my head. But switch it up a bit. Challenge your listener. Make them think "now where have I heard that synth line/bass beat/horn section before?" To me, that's the most satisfying part of being a "listener." So check this out, tell Johnatron what you think, and then grab those dusty vinyls in your closet and put them to use.

Everybody's gotta check out "Seventeen" by LA-based group Casxio. I like it's new-age hipness crossed with jammers like Kool and the Gang and how it is interestingly labeled as coke-funk. Definitely gets me grovin, even when I'm completely exhausted with all that college goodness. You can tell by the sound that all of the individuals are great musicians. You can check them out on Myspace or at their website. And if you're interested you can see them playing Indie 103's "check-one-two" night on Monday Feb 25th at the Viper Room in CA.

cuba + ac slater

After 81 years of corrupt ideals and casualties, Fidel Castro resigned. Well, sort of. He won't be seeking another political term in Cuba. The man's got bad health and well, he's 81. It's probably time to take that vacation to the Bahama's he's always wanted.

However, in non-political pro-electronic news...

Im working on putting a streaming player on the posts so I can stop using zShare. I find it's pop-ups unnecessary and they really make my computer slow. Be patient, I'm learning. I've also got a few Kill the Noise and Lismore remixes headed your way, for your extreme electronic listening pleasure :]

I also wanted to post this Chromeo mix that I found on Missing Toof because it's amazing. It's hard to find a good Chromeo mix these days because it seems like people mix it TOO much. Chromeo is good because they have a sound that they can call their own, which is not something that many electronic artists can seem to do because they spend too much of their time remixing what is already done. But I enjoy the added bass beat to this. Definitely worth a listen-UP.

Chromeo - Call Me Up (Kill the Noise Remix)

Love Theme by Fred Falke is much different, something you might find off of the Solid Goldberger blog. It's on the verge of progressive electronic but with a slower beat. Put it on when you're chillin at home or workin the dance floor, either way its got a great beat with a nice synth line that keeps you entertained.

My man Everything Continues just made this great Thieves mix that you all should hear. It's minimal, but with all of the over processed crap that's out there right now, it's definitely a good change of pace. But for real, every time I turn around there's a new mix of this song, some good, some not so good, some down right awful! EC definitely puts his own unique spin on things here and I'm diggin it.

uffie vs. princess superstar

I've never been that big of a fan of Uffie, which made me hesitant to listen to a track I found on superlaser that made the comparison between Princess Superstar and the infamous Uffie. However, I clicked on it anyway because of the curious person I am and might I say it was a pleasant surprise. The sound does remind me of Uffie, but unlike Uffie, Princess Superstar doesn't put her lyrics over the entire song or sing about spanking and fucking. I find it most enjoyable to listen to, and the bass is so hot that my external vibrates.

Larry Tee Ft. Princess Superstar - Work It Out (Herve Goes Low Remix)

This ones also bass bumpin, especially about 2 minutes 30 seconds through.

And have you heard the new Yelle song? I don't know what anybody else's opinion of it is, but I'm kind of 50/50 on it. I think the song sounds great, but the lyrics are all in French which I don't know a lick of. So it's like I'm kind of torn between it because the lyrics are a substantial part to this song due to the fact that they continue throughout the whole song. But I've never been one to listen to a song just because of the lyrics anyway.

late mix wednesday

Technically it's Thursday morning, but who cares? A few songs for you to enjoy, some you've heard, some you've haven't ( all zshare).

Disco Hospital-My Blood is all Drained
Found this on gomiheartelectric and I was like, yeah! Totally caught my attention. Seriously take a minute out for this one.

DJ Mehdi-Lucky Boy (Radar Remix)
Fantastic DJ Mehdi remix. At first I thought, oh, this is going to be like the 100 Chromeo "Needy Girl" remixes. But it's not. Radar dropped the tempo a little and made it less harsh. Not that Lucky Boy were ever harsh in the first place, but it's used for lack of better words.

Classixx-Cold Act III (Radio Edit)
[EDIT]By far one of my favorites at the moment. And I totally thought it was Uffie until someone recently noted that it's not. Seriously, I need to get better information from people beforer I post this stuff. Anyway, enjoy. It's a good one.

Romanthony-Colins Ave
Romanthony is a faint artist who is actually very well known if you do your homework: he sang for Daft Punk's "One More Time" and "Too Long". I love this because of the jazzy guitar that takes on the melody. The low vocals and steady but smooth beat are just another reason as to why I hope 2008 leads to more minimal, lo-fi electronic music.

predictions from the palms of blog-house.

So instead of creating the "best-of" 2007 list, I'm listing my predictions of what's to come for 2008. Granted I'm still a newborn in this blog-house [which, thanks to my readers, I now have a much clearer definition of] but I hope you read this list and take it for what my opinion is for 2008, and what I'd like music to evolve into. If you're big into the 2008 predictions you can check out 20 jazz funk greats who created a nice list with great explanations for their predictions.

Disco-House
It's something that's been around for almost 30 years and has the ability to keep reinventing itself. Italo-disco had a big breakthrough in 2007, particuarly with the emergence of Glass Candy. I also stumbled upon the wonderful blog solid goldberger which has great vinyl rips that you can stream and download. My prediciton for disco-house? Anything off of Radius Records, especially the Camaro’s Gang - Fuerza Major mix that starts of the list on their myspace.

Ed Banger Records
Ed Banger will continue to explode. There's really not much else to say here. I believe their family is getting bigger and bigger and there's no way to stop it.

Blog-House
It's become quite aparent to me that blog house is all around and I've fall victim to it. After multiple blog-rolls throughout the day [because I have nothing better to do with my time] I can always click on palms out and find everything that I had just been viewing on one simple sunday mix. It never ceases to amaze me. So then I asked myself the question of why I even bother looking anywhere else? I suppose it's the feeling you get when you find that ONE track on that ONE german/american/hip hop/graphic design blog of sorts and you can say to yourself, ahhhh I found this one before anybody else did. But really, you didn't, and I didn't. If it's on the internet there are a thousand people that know about it and have known for quite some time. But that's how music gets spread around from person to person. Those that take the time to do the research end up with the best results. My prediction for blog-house in 2008? It's going to get more nasty, funky, and poppin that it has ever been before. Blog-house has not yet reached it's zenith. I can see The Bloody Beetroots going many many places, hence the Italian tour with Justice that they just finished up. I've been seeing "Paparazzi pop up quite a bit recently. Seems as if he's already performed with just about EVERYONE [Boyz Noize, Diplo, DFA 1979 and A-Trak].

Graphic Design
In many ways it seems that your blog or myspace can make your music seem better if you've got a good graphic designer behind you. Hey, nothing like a little jump on the competition, right? All music genres have a certain style that seems to fall into place with the music. The best example I can give is Remixalone, who's graphic design style is quintessential of the culture that has risen in the past few years. [Just check out Steed Lord] Another popular designer is Atronig, who created the banner for fluokids.

Last but not least...
Kanye will dominate. 50 will retreat to a private island and will never be heard of again.

so fresh, so clean

Something a little more minimal than what I'm used to, but definitely worth listening to. The driving back beat keeps the song pushing forward, and I like that. This is another mix from my friend Everything Continues, out of Bloomington, Indiana. I'm waiting on a Kanye mix he should be releasing sometime after the beginning of the year. Check him out on MYSPACE.

hangover angst

It seems that the "thing to do" if you write for a blog is to post your Top 10 of the year, whether it be albums, songs, sex positions, whatever. And yeah, I guess I could rack my brain to come up with my own opinion of the ten best songs of the year. But what do you care what I think? So therefore, I'm not going to give one. But I will link to analog giant, who has a pretty decent list that comes jam-packed with videos, just because he's awesome like that.

And what's up with the Christmas electro mixes that are everywhere? I mean, seriously. It's funny once. But is it necessary to put up 6 Jingle Bell dub mixes?

I'm going to continue on this angsty post by discussing something I read in Spin magazine this past week. Spin was also doing their own versions of Top Ten of 2007, and evidently Justice's album Cross made it into the Top 40 Albums of 2007. This is what THEY say:

This Parisian duo emerged as the brightest lights in the Euro nü-rave scene that's also been dubbed blog-house, an apt name because the duo's bowel-loosening riffs are gargantuan enough to sound cool on even the crappiest computer speakers. Like mentors Daft Punk, Justice create populist dance music -- their Sabbath-meets-Nile Rodgers tunes are jacques-your-body jams for indie kids. With references drawn from '70s hesher rock -- quasi-Christian iconography, stomp-box bass lines, crunchy prog-synth riffs -- Justice made electronic music filthy, funky, and fun again. M.E.

Where in the world did blog-house come from? And what does that even mean? I guess I can kind of see where Spin is coming from here, because I doubt that they spend four hours a day searching through blogs for music like I do. But seriously, what can you expect from a title like that? If Justice is blog-house, then well, what else is? I know, I know I'm digging way deeper than I should here. I'd just rather not have Justice titled as such. And Justice, of all electronic bands to call blog-house....I guess Spin is just months and months behind the rest of us.

how bout strip skatin?

Now, there's many things I'm looking for when I am listening to music that artists represent themselves with. However, it's almost impossible to lable that exact feeling I get when I find something that truly catches my eye and when I [think] that I am not the only one who's going to feel the same way. I could say it's the bass beat that I look for, it's the odd mix of songs the artists put together, the ALMOST annoying lyrics or the breakdown, but really, what's it matter? If it's good, it's good, and all you have to do is hit play and turn up the volume to decide for yourself.

I was doing another one of my myspace binges when I ran across Strip Steve, an emerging artist on the Boysnoize record label. Like everything that's hot right now, Strip Steve is hitting it up in France. If only I did not live in the most centrally located place in the United States, otherwise I'm sure I'd be the first at the door of the clubs.

Coming out of Houston is Fixture who has his own Ocelot Lo Sforzo mix. Thank you iheartcomix for spawning an extreme force of Ocelot mixes due to your competition. But it's all good cause Fixture creates a damn good one. Althought his remix of Lo Sforzo is quite different than his other songs [which you can preview on his MYSPACE] it has a steady beat that doesnt get dulled out by either a] a repetitive vocal sound that's whiny and never varies, b] a bass beat that makes me want to crush my skull against the car window, or c] rip off Justice or Uffie. where's your moustache?

Take off your Nike Air Trainers and get out on the dance floor cause here comes Supercycle! It's dancy electro-pop-synth that's just emerging into the electronic music world [considering they just started making music in August 2007]. I had an email interview with them to figure out why they do what they do and....well...what's up with all of the mustaches.

Who is it that specifically influences your style?
Kraftwerk, George Martin/The Beattles, Quincy Jones/Michael Jackson, Megadeath, The Panacea, Rick Rubin, Bob Rock, Ricardo Almeida, disco, funk and rock... the 70's 80's and 90's combined.

Why did you start making electro music?
The electro is because of Jen, one half of Supercycle. She has always loved electro. She made electrostep as a solo artist. I bring in the harder edge and together we really like the sounds we create. She is a really insane editor, and I get a little crazy with creating sounds, so it works.

Primary equipment: Logic.
Supercycle doesn't have any US tour dates at the moment, but look out Toronto! They'll be playing at Shit La Merde in the near future.

And when asking about why all of their pictures on MYSPACE are of mustaches, well, they just like the damn mustaches, that's all. And if you do too, check out Movember, which makes November the month for mustache awareness.

Loud Pipes, from Liverpool, creates some funky synth pop beats that get me movin the minute I click "play." You might remember their remix of Purple Crush's"Vacation," which is pretty hot if I do say so myself. Their newest mix just missed winning iheartcomix's ocelot remix contest but still deserves a listen to because I think it's amazing.
